In the middle of the historic heart of Amsterdam, close to numerous cultural institutions and creative businesses, there is a unique concentration of humanities institutes. In this University Quarter, research and society are constantly interconnected.
Humanities Labs

Do monkeys have a sense of rhythm? Can AI be biased? Can drones make archaeological discoveries? Researchers in the Humanities Labs work with digital techniques and experimental methods, often in collaboration with partners from arts, culture, and societal sectors, to find answers to these kinds of questions. The merging of labs from all humanities disciplines under one roof provides a powerful and agile infrastructure.

State of the art infrastructure

The institutes of the KNAW Humanities Cluster (HuC) manage unique collections and build sustainable infrastructures for innovative humanities research in the Netherlands and beyond. The HuC develops data standards and makes collections and infrastructure publicly available for academic research, education, the heritage sector, and research software engineers.

Humanities Venture Lab

The Humanities Venture Lab at the UvA supports exploring, starting and established entrepreneurs in the humanities by means of coaching, workshops, and workspaces and offices in the city centre. The Venture Lab has a vast network of entrepreneurial humanities scholars who can assist in addressing societal issues.

University Library

At the Binnengasthuisterrein, the new University Library of the UvA is emerging on the site of the former Binnengasthuis hospital. The building is designed as a 21st-century library: an inspiring meeting place where you can study, research, and work - in short, a place where the entire academic community feels at home and welcome.

UvA Podia

The UvA venues Allard Pierson, SPUI25, University Library and VOX-POP programme activities throughout the year, many of which are free of charge. This makes the results of impactful research accessible to a wide audience.

Boek a space

The Amsterdam Humanities Hub encourages meeting, debate and research. At various locations in the University Quarter, spaces are available for meetings, collaboration and events. Apart from employees of the UvA and the KNAW Humanities Cluster, external partners and students can also use these spaces.
