Voices in the Making features an afternoon of talks, discussions and drinks where we’ll explore how ideas circulate and take shape to empower voices through the practice of (academic) publishing beyond status and prestige.
Hosted in collaboration with our friends at the Institute of Network Cultures (INC), the multidisciplinary culture research centre based in Amsterdam, we begin with our guest Tommaso Campagna to share insights from their project expub that explores alternative modes of publishing in (sub)cultural spaces: what is lacking in the current dominant modes of publishing? And what else can we do to change that?
Following the INC’s keynote on empowering cultural voices, we reflect on publishing in the academic sphere, and share how we launched Peripherals: a journal and archival platform, an experimental space for media research and creative work that exists between digital and academic worlds. This marks our own effort of empowering voices and an invitation for prospective authors looking to make their work visible.
But what voices are we actually making? After a short break, we invite contributors of Peripherals’ debut Issue to take the stage and showcase their work. Five authors offer a diverse set of topics ranging from AI and art, to online debates and queer theory. These incredible presentations further demonstrate the possibilities of alternative, expansive publishing in empowering authors and ideas that could have been otherwise unseen.
The programme concludes with a borrel to continue conversations in good company.

Practical information
This event is open to everyone. Organised by Terminally Online, the student organisation of MA Media Studies at the UvA.
Terminally Online is the student organisation of the Media Studies MA programme at the University of Amsterdam. We aim to connect students and researchers in the greater Amsterdam media scene. We hope to nourish the Amsterdam new media community and act as a resource for rising new media scholars by materializing the digital. We will promote the diverse media and digital culture events–talks, exhibitions, conferences, performances, etc– in Amsterdam and beyond. Our goal is to connect students with these happenings, empower students to join the research and art scene, and respond to the curiosities of our peers and faculty.
Tommaso Campagna is a new media researcher and visual artist based in Amsterdam with a focus on the intersection between digital activism and artistic imaginaries with a particular focus on critical and sustainable infrastructures. Currently, he is working at the Institute of Network Cultures as a researcher and editor. You can learn more about him on his website.
The Institute of Network Cultures analyses and shapes the terrain of network cultures through events, publications, and online dialogue. Their projects evolve around urgent publishing, alternative revenue models, critical design and making, digital counter culture and much more.
