Do you have a strong connection to Suriname, decolonial discourse, or heritage practices? We are the student team CLOSE UP (VOX-POP, University of Amsterdam), and we invite you to think alongside us as we develop our exhibition.
Event details of Open call: looking for a sounding board
Start date
31 March 2026
End date
6 April 2026

From 11 June to 2 July, we will present a pop-up exhibition at VOX-POP. The exhibition departs from the Surinamica collection and the exhibition Not My Soul at the Allard Pierson.

In this pop-up, we will present seven works and explore how Surinamese perspectives, forms of resistance, and knowledge practices might be given a just place within institutions such as universities and museums. The works will be selected through an open call, welcoming a wide range of artistic practices.

Why your input?

As a student team, we are responsible for the development and organisation of the exhibition. At the same time, we place great value on a careful and multi-vocal approach. We are therefore seeking three engaged advisors who are willing to reflect with us from different perspectives:

  • An academic perspective: a researcher or expert in decolonial theory, postcolonial studies, or critical heritage practices

  • An experiential perspective: someone with lived experience and a strong connection to Surinamese communities and contexts

  • An artistic perspective: an artist or curator with an affinity for representing colonial histories and their contemporary legacies

What does it involve?

We invite you to take part in 2 to 3 sessions in which we collectively reflect on the thematic direction, language use, and curatorial choices. You will act as a sounding board: sharing insights, posing critical questions, and helping us to further develop our approach—without carrying final responsibility for the exhibition.

What do we offer?

As this is a student project with a limited budget, we offer

  • A one-off honorarium €100
  • Name credit as an advisor
  • The opportunity to contribute to the positioning of Surinamese perspectives within an academic and cultural context
