This is a rare chance to see a modern Russian art-house film by upcoming director Lyuba Mulmenko. “Frau” is a love-story and a modern fairy-tale with a twist. It is funny, moving and sports superb dialogues like only playwright, screenwriter and director Lyuba Mulmenko could pull off!

“Frau” (2023, director Lyubov Mulmenko)
Vanya is a young man with oddities. He works at the Hunter and Fisherman's store, lives in an old-fashioned granny apartment, and calls all women "Frau." Everything changes when he meets Kristina, a ballerina of the Perm Opera and Ballet Theater and begins to court her in his own original manner.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director. Gijs Kessler (International Institute of Social History) will provide a brief introduction the film.

Lyubov Mulmenko - film director

Russian filmmaker based in Belgrade, Serbia. In 2014 debuted as a screenwriter with three films: “Hope Factory” (Rotterdam IFF competition, Vilnius IFF Award/ “Best Film”), “Another Year” (winner of the Big Screen at Rotterdam) and “Name Me” (section New Directors at San Sebastian). Mulmenko’s scriptwriting career has continued with the films “Fidelity” (Rotterdam IFF competition, 2020), “Compartment No. 6” (co-winner of Grand Prix at Cannes, 2021) and “Unclenching the Fists” (winner of Un Certain Regard sidebar at Cannes, 2021). Mulmenko's directorial debut “Danube" was released in 2021 (Kinotavr Film Festival, Belgrade Auteur Film Festival, Russian Guild of Film Critics' Award/ “Event of the Year”). Two years later, her second film “Frau” premiered.

Gijs Kessler

Senior Research Fellow at the International Institute of Social History (IISH) in Amsterdam. He is a specialist on the social and economic history of Russia and the Soviet-Union. From 2002 to 2016 he worked and lived in Moscow. In 2022 he published his book ‘Rusland – land dat anders wil zijn’, a first-hand account of thirty years of change in Russia.
